Masthead rigging bolt replacement - stainless steel 1Wed 12 Jul 2023 07:31:18
mhsorens mhsorens Tue 11 Jul 2023 14:08:58 I need to replace the blackened, bent and worn rigging bolts to get my halyard blocks running freely.

Any one sure of the bolt material? I now for certain that owners use a stainless steel bolt in the mast foot, but what about galvanic reactions with the aluminium mast?

Ian & Julie Ian & Julie Wed 12 Jul 2023 07:31:18 When replacing rigging bolts, it's important to consider the potential for galvanic reactions between different metals. Aluminum masts and stainless steel bolts can indeed create galvanic corrosion due to their dissimilar properties. To mitigate this issue, it's advisable to use bolts made of a compatible material, such as aluminum or titanium, which are less likely to cause galvanic corrosion with the mast. Consulting with a marine specialist or a professional rigger would be a wise decision to ensure you choose the appropriate bolt material for your specific situation.
