Lazy Daze

Donald Wright recently sent me this e-mail: "Please find attached pic of "Lazy Daze", my Manta 19 based at North Berwick , Firth of Forth, Scotland. The photo was taken by Derek Braid of East Lothian Yacht Club (of which I am also a member) on the return from a barbecue at Seacliff. Seacliff lies between North Berwick and Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. The Bass Rock (one of the worlds largest sites for nesting Gannets among other claims to fame) lies just offshore and the local weather is claimed to be the sunniest in Scotland, hence the sobriquet "Sunny Dunny". Great boat for single handed sailing and good in a blow too."

Craig Ritche's Manta 'Bonus'

Here is Craig Ritche's Manta 'Bonus'. He keeps her on a swinging mooring at Garelochhead (Scotland) in front of his house which allows him a sail most evenings after work for an hour or two. Craig says "Great boat for introducing my two sons, Conal and Euan to sailing, Conal, aged 9 is a keen sailer who I need to fight to give up the tiller. Boat sails well, I am looking forward to sailing the upper Clyde and the many Lochs next year, may even take her over to Loch Lommond for a week next year."

Michael Beacham

Michael Beacham sent a couple of photos of his Manta and this e-mail: "I moved from Somerset to Falmouth, Cornwall last summer. Always been a petrolhead but sold my vintage racing jaguar and bought a very sad looking manta 19 in a marina berth in Falmouth. She hadn't been touched in 18 months. Researched your site before I bought and very impressed with the pretty lines although I had never been ON a sail boat, yet alone sailed one. I have managed to take the Manta out of the water, anti fouled and repainted the hull. Freed up the lifting keel but it still sticks so will try to replace at the end of the summer. Gutted the interior and cleaned, cleaned cleaned everything including the ropes (or sheets !!!). Outboard has been serviced. Removed all exterior woodwork, stripped and revarnished. Interior wood removed, has been painted white. Have replaced perspex windows and seals. She will be named NAT. Took her out for the first time two weeks ago and I am now addicted. Love her to bits although tonight the rudder snapped clean in half whilst under power approaching the marina. No sign of striking anything !!"

Bill Beattie

Bill Beattie sent me this update of his Manta, now named Blue Ray. "I now keep mine on a swinging mooring at Cardwell Bay in Gourock on the Clyde. It's a convenient location which takes me about an hour to get there from home. The first year's membership of the sailing club was only £90 including the joining fee and ground rental for the mooring, so it was great valve for money. I made my own mooring anchors and laid them myself, being a diver helps. From there I have easy access to the lochs of the upper Clyde, Loch Long, Loch Goil and others. The Island of Bute and Rothesay are not far away if the wind is favourable. So it's pretty ideal. I have noticed a few more Manta's up our way and was recently contacted by a lady who keeps hers in the marina in Largs. So here's some more pictures. One of my Manta now called 'Blue-Ray' on its mooring and one of her with my son Callum up in Loch Goil."

Michael Shultz from Hamburg

"I'm Michael from Hamburg and since last winter proud 0wner of a Manta 19 myself. Stepping the mast.A close friend gave me advice that she was for sale and- voilá- here we are. I nearly instantly fell in love with that boat. Obviously the Lady already had been in service a few years (she's about 30)and her hull had suffered a lot of smaller and bigger scratches through the years. So I decided to give her a small facelift. I have enclosed a few pictures, so you can see for yourself."

Geroge Mellish sent me this photo and e-mail about his Manta:

"I enclose a photo of Grizabella, our Manta 19, No. 1058, built by Blakes in 1977. She is at anchor in June 2004 at Polridmouth, Cornwall near Fowey where she usually lives on her trailer. I have also had what now seems to be a common problem with the centre plate - with some difficulty in removal and refitting I got a new one cut in 8mm boiler plate two years ago. I now wish I had got it cut in stainless steel. Her table is missing and I would like to reproduce one. I wondered if any one could let me see photos of the original with fittings and/or dimensions. I also have a spinnaker that looks as if it has never been used and a pole and some related fittings. I haven't quite figured out the best way to have an uphaul and downhaul for the pole fitted - any suggestions? I have put in a new halyard which as may be seen from the photos runs in front of the forestay and is attached to the front guardrail. We use her for creek (and pub!) crawling up the Fowey river and getting round to secluded bays in the area. She certainly seems to sail well although unfortunately our young children tend to demand we turn the engine on to get to the beach more quickly."

Erwin Fluri in Holland

Here are a few photos of a Manta belonging to Erwin Fluri in Holland. She is sail number 1114, built in 1977 and named Dot (which is dutch for Cute). Since Erwin bought her, he has spent 2 years renovating her and has replaced the centre plate and windows. He has also treated osmosis on her hull and has given Dot a fantastic looking paint job which you will see in his photos.

Peter Dickinson

Peter Dickinson sent me this e-mail. "Hello, I just thought I'd send you a picture of my Manta 19 'Nomad', number 1226. Built on the Wirral in 1979, she has had some refurbishment recently, including epoxy coating of the hull & keel. Like you, I have had some problems with the centreplate, in fact it was completely jammed with rust when I bought the boat about two years ago. I managed to free it, and a boatyard removed it. Although it was not so badly corroded as Sophie's, I decided to measure it and get a new one made from stainless steel. This has been laser cut from 8mm stainless plate by a profiling company, and cost about £200. It has not yet been fitted - this will be a job for the winter when she is out of the water. Nomad is currently on a swinging mooring on Lake Windermere, near Ferry Nab at Bowness-on- Windermere, which is where she was photographed. There are at least three other Manta 19s on the lake to my knowledge. Two are also near Ferry Nab, and one is at Fell Foot Park at the southern end of the lake. I remember seeing another at Waterhead - the northern end of the lake, but didn't see her the last time I was there."

I saw "Topsy", a Manta 16, moored on Lake Bala when I was sailing there in an RS400 open event during the Easter 2002 Bank Holiday weekend. Not sure about the forward mast rake though.

Desi Booth from the RNYC contacted me asking if I had any details on a manta centre plate. I sent him details of Sophie's plate and in his reply he sent me a picture of his Manta "Katy". I was intrigued to learn the name of his Manta and wondered if she is the same Manta from the What Katy Did Next story on the links page.
