Mast Position 4Thu 14 Aug 2008 23:25:57
gmcgirk gmcgirk Tue 12 Aug 2008 16:59:01 I have just bought the Manta 19 known as 'Lazy Daze'. I have now re-named it 'Sea Eagle'. The mast is positioned near the forward end of the mast step bracket thing. The surveyor has said that the mast should be re positioned so that it is at the back of the stepping bracket above the internal supports. On reading the brochure on this site it says that the mast can be positioned presumably anywhere on the bracket. Does anyone know if my present position is in fact ok?

gmcgirk gmcgirk Wed 13 Aug 2008 22:05:34 Thanks Mark,

I have tried moving the mast back by loosening the shrouds and the back stay but i can't get the pin to budge. Is this usually quite difficult? I don't want to force it.
Mark Mark Thu 14 Aug 2008 10:37:46 I've never tried moving the mast with it in the upright position, I have always lowered it and even then it can bit a bit tricky, requiring the mast to be 'wiggled' by the person supporting it whilst another person tries to get the bolt out. With the mast upright you have the full weight of the mast on the bolt and while you may manage to remove it (with force) you will probably not be able to refit it as the mast will drop an eigth of an inch or so the holes won't line up. It will be VERY hard to try and line the holes up with the mast vertical - don't do it.

I've never checked on 'Sophie' to see where the mast is in relation to the support but then again, I've never had 'Sophie' surveyed. I insured Sophie with Noble Marine and they never asked for a survey.

I doubt that your Manta has been modified. If things had been moved I'm sure that there would be some evidence of this e.g. old holes/marks in the cabin roof.

I measured Sophie's mast step which is about 40 cm from the hatch. In the cabin the support frame is about 47 cm back. Click on the photo to see a bit more detail.
