gooseneck fitting

In case the gooseneck fittings are different in different boats, or has been changed in mine, there's a sliding 'box' on the mast into which the pin fitting on the boom is inserted - only it's not as simple as that. There seems to be a spring arrangement which holds the grooved pin in place but I have tried and failed to get it to work. Help!

As everyone else probably knows, you just slide the fitting up the mast and remove via the wider slot for feeding in the mainsail.
